The mission of Wastewater SPHERE is to advance environmental surveillance of sewage to inform local and global efforts for monitoring and supporting public health measures to combat disease. PATH, Michigan State University, KWR Water Research Institute, and Venthic have developed an open access repository of datasets for organizations and individuals testing for SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and other waterways.
W-SPHERE has demonstrated a historic paradigm shift in the use of wastewater monitoring data, moving from safe sanitation and waterborne disease to the extraction of public health information from wastewater in support of community disease surveillance and pandemic response. To date, the W-SPHERE has collected 27 datasets on SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater, representing more than 1,500 monitoring sites globally and more than 200,000 wastewater samples from 35 countries.
